Trinket Box
This simple and elegant Trinket Box is hand made from a speciality product called Shagreen.
Shagreen comes from the hide of a Stingray. Stingray skins are covered with a layer of tiny round enamel “beads” which add protection. These beads get larger towards the center of the back, finishing in an “eye” that gives focus to each skin. It’s an unusual and beautiful textured hide that has been used by Louis Vuitton and many other designers and furniture makers over the centuries who sought to fuse French traditional luxury with exotic and precious materials Shagreen has been a luxurious and highly sought after decorative material for many centuries. Designers like Clément Rousseau and Jean-Michael Frank used shagreen to create their most sumptuous furniture. Signifying luxury and exoticism, this often controversial material is once more in vogue.
Sustainably-sourced remnants from the fishing industry are used.
Here we are offering a wonderful small and precious trinket box that will make a beautiful keep forever gift. It can be used for jewels, a watch box, cufflinks- all sorts of things.
Europe began importing Shagreen-covered objects during the 17th and 18th centuries, and in the mid-1700s, a tanner in Paris became the first European shagreen expert ‘Gallucha.’
” Louis XV’s most famous mistress, Madame de Pompadour, was the dominant patron of Monsieur Galluchat, and it was said that a week didn’t go by when she didn’t buy some new object, often in shagreen.”
The word “shagreen” supposedly comes from the Turkish word “sagri,” which refers to the rump or haunches of a mammal, presumably used in approximating the distinctive texture of sting rays.
This Hand made treasure box has a rose wood interior and is a piece of beauty.
It is available in two colours: Smokey grey and Dusty Blue
